The welcome every guest in the UAE recognises is three things: a cup of Arabic coffee poured from a dallah, a date offered first, and a word of greeting. Many hotels already perform the first two at the front desk. The third is what makes it the hotel's own: «حياكم الله» on the tray the coffee comes on, «تفضلوا» on the box the dates are in, the guest's name on the lid of a VIP gift. This guide explains the ritual, the words and what they mean, and how it becomes an amenity on the room's table, made to order in our UAE workshop: a «حياكم الله» serving tray is AED 115, a dates box with the guest's name AED 215.
The ritual, as a guest knows it
Arabic coffee, gahwa, is light and green-gold, roasted lightly and brewed with cardamom, often saffron and a little rose water, and never sweetened; the dates are the sweetness. UNESCO inscribed Arabic coffee on its list of intangible heritage in 2015, for the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar together, as a symbol of generosity. The host pours from the dallah into a small handleless cup, the finjan, only a third full, with the right hand, serving the eldest or the most honoured guest first; a guest who has had enough shakes the cup gently. The date comes before the coffee, and the mabkhara comes last: when the oud is passed round, the visit is ending, which the proverb puts as «ما بعد العود قعود», after the oud, no more sitting. Our mabkhara guide covers that part.
A hotel does not need to teach its guests any of this. It needs the objects to be right, and the words to be the ones a guest would hear in an Emirati home.
The words, and what they say
- «حياكم الله» (hayyakum Allah): "may God give you life", the welcome you hear at the door of a majlis. The warmest and the most Gulf of the greetings; on the tray it reads as the host's own voice.
- «أهلاً وسهلاً» (ahlan wa sahlan): "you have come to family, and to easy ground", the welcome of the whole Arab world. Right for a hotel with guests from everywhere.
- «تفضلوا» (tafaddalu): "please, be served", what the host says as the tray is set down. On a dates box or a tray it is the object speaking.
- «الضيف عزيز» (ad-dayf 'aziz): "the guest is dear", the line hotels ask for most, because it says what a hotel is for.
- «قهوة الصباح» (gahwat as-sabah): "morning coffee", for the breakfast tray and the suite's coffee corner.
More phrases, with their meanings, are in our guide to popular calligraphy phrases. Whatever is chosen, a guest who reads Arabic will read it, so the spelling and the vowel marks are checked letter by letter before anything is cut; a guest who does not read it will ask, and the answer above is worth giving.
The amenity on the room's table
In a home the welcome is served; in a hotel room it is set out and waits. That is why it is objects rather than a service, and why the objects carry the words. The six-piece majlis set on the hotels page is the whole arrangement: a serving tray for the coffee, a dates box, a tissue box, a glass bowl, a napkin holder and a mabkhara. Three ways to set it:
The arrival tray
The tray, the dallah and two cups, a few dates in the bowl. The tray says «حياكم الله» or «تفضلوا»; housekeeping refills the dates and the coffee flask daily. This is the arrival ritual of the front desk, moved into the room, and it costs the hotel a tray and a box per room rather than a staff member per arrival.
The suite's coffee corner
A «قهوة الصباح» tray by the kettle, the «قهوة عربية وقلب طيّب» mug (AED 50) beside it, the napkin holder with the hotel's greeting. Our coffee corner page shows the arrangement at home scale; a suite is the same table, better lit.
The VIP gift
For a delegation, a wedding party or a returning guest, a dates box whose lid carries the guest's name in Thuluth, filled by the hotel's kitchen, left on the table with a card. The name is composed in Arabic calligraphy for each guest; send the names as a list, and the artwork comes back as a proof within 48 hours of the purchase order. It is the one amenity a guest photographs and takes home.
Which script for a welcome
Diwani for «حياكم الله» and «أهلاً وسهلاً»: its loops are the shape of a greeting. Ruq'ah for the everyday pieces, the tissue box and the mug, because it is the hand people write in. Thuluth for a name on a lid, because a name deserves the formal script. Naskh when the line is long and must be read without effort. Our guide to Arabic calligraphy in hotel design sets out the five scripts by place, and the Diwani phrases page in Mashq Studio shows the greetings written out.
The pieces
- «حياكم الله» serving tray, Diwani: AED 115 clear, AED 165 gold-tinted.

Quick answers
What is the traditional Emirati welcome? A date offered first, then Arabic coffee poured from a dallah into a small cup, a third full, with a word of greeting: «حياكم الله» or «أهلاً وسهلاً». The mabkhara with oud is passed at the end of the visit.
What does «حياكم الله» mean? "May God give you life": the Gulf welcome, said at the door and written on the tray.
What welcome gift suits a hotel in the UAE? A dates box with the guest's name in calligraphy (AED 215), filled by the kitchen, or the room's tray and box carrying the hotel's greeting. Both are made in the UAE, not imported.
How long does a run for every room take? 10–14 working days from artwork approval and payment, plus two courier days; a single set is made in 5–7 working days. For Ramadan 2027 the purchase order must reach us by Wednesday 13 January; the dates are in our Ramadan 2027 guide for hotels.
Send the room count and the greeting you want on WhatsApp; the numbered quotation comes the same working day. UAE delivery to one address is AED 25 per order for décor; the company questions are answered on the corporate gifting page.
About this guide: written by MASHQ, which makes Arabic calligraphy pieces to order in its UAE workshop (1click2open LLC, Sharjah). Arabic coffee's inscription is on UNESCO's list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity (2015, "Arabic coffee, a symbol of generosity"); the customs are described as customs, as they are kept in Emirati homes. Prices were checked against the shop in October 2026.
