The mabkhara — a traditional Arabian incense burner — is at the heart of Gulf hospitality. Here's what it is, how to use it, and how to choose one for your home.
What is a mabkhara?
A mabkhara holds burning charcoal and fragrant bakhoor (scented wood chips) or oud, filling a room with a rich, welcoming aroma. Passing the mabkhara to guests is a cherished gesture of hospitality across the UAE and the wider Gulf.
How to use one
Light a charcoal disc until it glows, place it in the burner, then add a small piece of bakhoor on top. Let the scented smoke drift through the room — and waft it gently over seating areas and even clothing.
Styling it at home
A sculptural mabkhara doubles as décor. Our Set of 3 Arabesque Censers blends traditional form with modern design, so it looks beautiful even when it isn't in use.
