Live calligraphy at a UAE wedding: the calligrapher's table on an open terrace with reed pens, ink and gold-edged place cards

Live calligraphy is a calligrapher at a table in your event, writing each guest's name in Arabic calligraphy in front of them, on a place card, a gift tag or an envelope they keep. It has become a fixture of weddings, corporate dinners and exhibition stands in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi because it does three things at once: it seats the room, it gives every guest a piece to take home, and it draws people to one spot for as long as it is open. This guide says how it works, how many hours to book, what to prepare and what the calligrapher writes; MASHQ brings a calligrapher to events anywhere in the UAE for 2 to 8 hours, quoted in writing within one working day.

What live calligraphy is, and what it is not

A professional calligrapher writes with a reed pen, the qalam, cut by hand to a chisel nib, and ink: the classical scripts of Arabic calligraphy as they have been written for a thousand years. At an event the calligrapher writes short things, mostly names, on cards and tags, one at a time, with the guest watching. It is not a printed card and not a brush-pen flourish; the strokes are the real ones, which is why guests stop to watch and why the card survives the evening. The calligrapher writes Arabic letters only. A name from another language is spelled out in Arabic with the guest first, so that it reads as the guest says it, and for many guests it is the first time they see their own name written in Arabic script.

Where it goes, and what gets written

Weddings and engagements

Place cards with every guest's name, written before the doors open from your list, then the latecomers and the plus-ones at the table as they arrive. Favour tags with the couple's names and the date; the guest book's opening line. Diwani is the usual script, because its loops are the shape of a celebration.

Corporate dinners and conferences

Name cards for a seated dinner, a tag on each delegate's gift, a line on the envelope of an invitation handed over in person. For a government or a protocol dinner the calligrapher writes in Thuluth, the formal script.

Exhibition stands and brand activations

Visitors leave your stand with their name in Arabic calligraphy on a card or a bookmark. The writing takes a minute or two, which is time they spend in front of your team; a queue at a calligraphy table is the one queue a stand wants.

Product launches and store openings

A piece with each guest's name, or your product itself carrying a line in calligraphy: a bottle, a box, a bag. Send a photograph of the object first and we say what the surface takes.

Ramadan majlis, Eid and National Day

Greetings and names on envelopes, gift boxes and cards; the lines the season already uses, «رمضان كريم», «عيد مبارك», and the UAE's greeting on the national day.

How many hours to book

The booking runs from 2 to 8 hours, and the right number follows the guest flow, not the length of the party. Three rules of thumb from the table:

  • A first name in Ruq'ah or Naskh on a place card takes about a minute, including checking the spelling with the guest: 40 to 60 names an hour. A longer name in Diwani, with its ornaments, takes two to three minutes: 20 to 30 an hour.
  • For a seated dinner, send the guest list in advance. The cards are written before the doors open, and the booked hours go to the guests who like to watch, the names that changed, and the tags on the gifts.
  • Book the hours when guests pass the table, not the whole event. For a wedding that is the reception and the first part of the dinner, 3 to 4 hours; for a stand it is the opening hours of the busiest day, 4 to 8; for a launch or a majlis, 2 to 3.

A second day or a longer booking is quoted on request. The quote itself is written from five things: the hours, the number of guests or pieces, the venue and its travel, the materials (our cards, or your stationery), and the scripts and languages of the names. There is no price list for events because no two events are the same; the page a calligrapher at your event has the form, and a written quote comes within one working day.

What the venue prepares

A table and a chair where guests pass: the entrance, the gift table or the front of the stand. Good light on the table, and a lamp in the evening. The guest list, if you want the first names ready before the doors open. And if we are writing on your own items, bottles, boxes or bags, a photograph first: card, paper, kraft and smooth leather take ink well; glass, acrylic and coated surfaces depend on the finish. MASHQ brings the reed pens, the inks, gold ink, the cards and the table setting, and every emirate is covered: Sharjah and Dubai usually without a travel line on the quote, Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates with one stated.

Which script for the occasion

Diwani for weddings and celebrations; Thuluth for ceremony and protocol; Ruq'ah for a quick, clear hand on many cards; Naskh and Kufi where the line must be read without effort. Our guide to Arabic calligraphy in hotel design sets the five scripts out by place, and you can see any words in each script, free, in Mashq Studio before you decide.

Pieces that outlast the evening

The card written in front of the guest pairs with pieces made before the day in our Sharjah workshop: the guest's name framed, A3 from AED 185; a dates box with a name on the lid, AED 215; welcome trays with «حياكم الله» or «أهلاً وسهلاً» for the majlis. For a batch of gifts for a corporate event, the corporate gifting page has the volume ladder and the dates; for a hotel's gala or iftar, the hotels page.

Quick answers

How much does live calligraphy cost in Dubai? It is quoted per event, from the hours (2 to 8), the number of guests, the venue, the materials and the scripts; a written quote reaches you within one working day. Companies receive a numbered quotation; payment is in full in advance by bank transfer or card link, and the commercial invoice is issued on payment.

Can a non-Arabic name be written? Yes, in Arabic letters. The calligrapher writes the Arabic script only; a name from another language is spelled in Arabic with the guest first.

How far ahead should we book? Two weeks is comfortable; the weeks before National Day, the nights of Ramadan and the wedding season book earlier. The date is held once the quote is paid.

Which emirates are covered? All seven: Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. The venue is part of the quote; nothing is added on the day.

Tell us about the event on the live calligraphy page, or on WhatsApp; the quote comes within one working day.

About this guide: written by MASHQ, which brings a calligrapher to events across the UAE and makes Arabic calligraphy pieces to order in its workshop (1click2open LLC, Sharjah). The names-per-hour figures are the calligrapher's own, measured at the table; prices of the pieces were checked against the shop in October 2026.

Not sure which piece or size to choose? Ask us on WhatsApp and we will answer with the size and the price.
