The best short Arabic coffee quotes read at a glance: two or three words with a joke or some warmth in them, like «فنجان قهوة وسالفة» (a cup of coffee and a good chat), «ما قبل القهوة لا يُحتسب» (whatever happened before coffee doesn't count) or «فنجان محبة» (a cup of affection). Below are the ten lines we print on mugs for AED 50 and set on serving trays from AED 115, each with its meaning and the person it suits.
The ten «قبل القهوة» lines, with their meanings
«قبل القهوة», "before coffee", is the name of our coffee line: ten short sayings in the voice of a Gulf kitchen, each written in Ruq'ah on a white mug and in Ruq'ah or Diwani on an acrylic tray. They are common turns of phrase we chose and set, not quotations from a named author.
- «ما قبل القهوة لا يُحتسب», whatever happened before coffee doesn't count. For the person who does not start the day before the first cup, and the colleague who arrives silent. On a Ruq'ah mug.
- «لا تكلّمني قبل القهوة», don't talk to me before coffee. A warning, kindly meant. For a husband or a brother who wakes up without words.
- «قهوتي سادة… ومزاجي كذلك», my coffee's black, and so is my mood. In the Gulf «سادة» means coffee with no sugar, and here the mood has no sugar either. For whoever takes it bitter and says so.
- «كوب واحد لا يكفي», one cup is never enough. The honest one. For a student in exam season, or anyone on night shifts.
- «صباح القهوة», a coffee morning. The greeting many people send before "good morning". For the friend whose message starts your day, and for a new home.
- «الحبّ من أول رشفة», love at first sip. A play on "love at first sight". For a couple, an engagement, an anniversary. On a Ruq'ah mug.
- «قهوة عربية وقلب طيّب», Arabic coffee and a kind heart. The two things a majlis offers first. For a father, a grandfather, the host who pours before he asks. On a Ruq'ah mug.
- «فنجان قهوة وسالفة», a cup of coffee and a good chat. «سالفة» is the Gulf word for the story you sit down for. For a mother, for a circle of friends, for the afternoon visit. On a Ruq'ah tray.
- «الشاي حلّ لكل شيء», tea is the answer to everything. For the tea people in the house, who meet every problem with a pot.
- «شاي كرك والدنيا بخير», karak tea and all is right with the world. The UAE's everyday comfort in one line. For the office, and for whoever stops at the cafeteria every evening.
Three more coffee lines, for the tray
- «قهوة الصباح», morning coffee. The ritual named plainly, on the tray that carries the first cup of the day: in Diwani on a serving tray, and in Ruq'ah too.
- «فنجان محبة», a cup of affection. What a cup of Arabic coffee actually is, in two words. The tray for a mother, a mother-in-law, the aunt whose dallah is never empty: «فنجان محبة» in Diwani.
- «صباح الخير», good morning. The simplest thing a tray can say, and the one used every day: «صباح الخير» in Ruq'ah.

A mug or a tray?
A mug is for one person; a tray is for a household. The mug is white ceramic, 330 ml, with the line printed in Ruq'ah to order in the UAE, AED 50. The tray is 30 × 26 cm and 5 cm deep in 5 mm acrylic, laser-cut and then sanded, cleaned and inspected by hand in our workshop: AED 115 in clear, AED 165 gold-tinted.
