Four ways work on a rental wall without a drill: adhesive picture-hanging strips rated for the frame's weight, hooks on a picture rail, a leaning display on a console or shelf, and a floor-to-ceiling tension pole. A framed A4 calligraphy paint costs AED 140, and UAE delivery is a flat AED 50 per order. Before any of them, read your tenancy contract. Below: what each method suits, and where it fails.
What does my tenancy contract allow?
Many tenancy contracts in the UAE restrict changes to the walls, and some buildings add rules of their own through the management office. Read the clause on alterations first. If you want to drill, ask the landlord or the building management and keep the answer in writing, because holes left at the end of a tenancy can come out of the security deposit. Ask at the same time whether the flat already has hooks you may reuse.
Do adhesive strips hold a framed piece?
Adhesive picture-hanging strips are sold with a weight rating printed on the pack. They hold when three things are true:
- The rating covers the frame. Check the frame's weight against the strip's rating and stay comfortably under it. To weigh a frame at home, stand on a bathroom scale holding it, then without it, and take the difference.
- The wall suits the adhesive. Smooth, painted, clean and dry. Strips hold poorly on textured paint, wallpaper, tiles and fresh paint; the pack says how long to wait after painting.
- The spot stays cool and dry. Adhesives soften with heat and humidity. A wall in the afternoon sun, or beside a bathroom or kitchen, is the wrong place.
Test one strip in a hidden corner first, since a strip can lift paint as it comes off, and remove it slowly the way the pack says. A frame under acrylic glass weighs more than the same frame without it, so check the rating twice. For A1 and above, lean the frame rather than stick it.

What about picture-rail hooks?
A picture rail is a moulding that runs around the room just below the ceiling. Hooks sit over it and a cord or chain drops to the frame, so nothing is fixed to the wall. Few new UAE apartments have one, but some villas and older buildings do, and it is the most flexible option: a piece moves along the wall in a minute. Use hooks and cord rated for the weight, and look at how the back of the frame is fitted before you buy them. Fitting a new rail means drilling, so that is a question for the landlord.
Can I simply lean it?
Yes, and it needs no hardware at all: stand the framed piece on a console, a sideboard, a deep shelf or a mantel and let it rest against the wall. It suits every size and is the safest choice for the largest frames.
- Put a small non-slip pad or a little removable putty under the bottom edge so the frame cannot slide, and in a home with children keep large frames off low tables.
- Choose a frame a little narrower than the furniture, and layer: a larger piece at the back, a smaller one or an object in front. Our guide to styling a console and a coffee table has more.
- Keep a verse of the Qur'an where it is honoured, on a console or a shelf, never propped on the floor. Our guide to Qur'anic verses for the home covers which to hang and where.
Do tension rods and poles work?
A floor-to-ceiling tension pole wedges between floor and ceiling by spring or screw pressure, and frames hang from hooks along it, so it never touches the wall. It suits an alcove or a room divider, and comes down on moving day. Choose one that states its maximum load, check that the ceiling above it is solid rather than a suspended panel, and keep heavier frames low on the pole. A short tension rod across a niche can carry a light frame on hooks. Both are for lighter pieces: check the rating before you trust either with glazing.
Where and how high should it hang?
Whatever holds it, the centre of the piece belongs about 150 cm from the floor, and above a sofa or a console its width is about two-thirds of the furniture's. The size guide and our post on choosing the size of a calligraphy painting set out the full rule. Keep any print out of direct sun.

Quick answers
How much weight can adhesive strips hold? What the pack states, on the surface it states. Weigh the framed piece and stay under the rating.
Is acrylic glass safer on a rental wall? Acrylic is lighter than glass and far less likely to shatter if a piece falls, but it still adds weight: check the strip's rating against the glazed frame.
Can I hang the largest sizes without drilling? Lean them. For A1 and above, a console or a deep shelf is safer than any adhesive.
