Buying Arabic calligraphy in the UAE comes down to one first choice: an original, written by hand and signed by a calligrapher (from AED 550), or a calligraphy paint, a classical design printed on cotton canvas and framed by hand (from AED 60 rolled, AED 150 framed). Everything else, the script, the size and the frame, follows from that. This guide goes through each decision in the order a buyer meets it, with the prices and lead times as they stand.
An original or a paint?
An original is the sheet itself: ink on paper, written by the calligrapher whose name it carries, and signed. MASHQ carries forty of them by three calligraphers. Prices are per work and stated on each page: Anwar Alhulwani from AED 550, Rasha Kasim from AED 3,970, Ahmed Alhawary from AED 4,550.
A calligraphy paint is a classical design, a verse, a proverb, a name, printed with archival inks on cotton canvas in our UAE workshop. It costs from AED 60 as a rolled A3 canvas, AED 150 framed at A3 and AED 245 framed at A2, and it can carry your own words: open any paint in Mashq Studio, write your line, and order it made.
Choose an original when the object itself matters: the hand, the paper, the signature, a piece that can pass to the next generation. Choose a paint when the words matter most, when you want a particular phrase, a name or a size, or when the budget is a gift's rather than a collector's.
Why prices differ so much
An original's price reflects the calligrapher's hours at the sheet, the size of the paper and the complexity of the composition: a single phrase in one line is a different undertaking from a dense Quranic composition in gold and black, and a large sheet can take weeks. That is why the same shop runs from AED 550 to several thousand. A paint's price follows only its size and its frame, because the design is the calligrapher's work done once and printed to order: A3 rolled, A3 framed and A2 framed are the three steps most people choose between.
Which script?
The script sets the voice of the piece before anyone reads a word of it.
- Thuluth is the monumental hand of mosque walls. It reads from across a room, and a single line can hold a whole wall.
- Diwani is the knotted, ceremonial script of the Ottoman chancery, and the one most people choose for a name.
- Naskh is the clear hand of the printed Qur'an: the choice when everyone at the table must be able to read the phrase.
- Kufic is geometric and architectural, the modern choice for a clean wall or a monogram.
- Nastaliq is the hanging Persian script, the only one that makes Persian poetry look like itself.

What size?
Measure the wall, not the piece. A calligraphy work hung above a sofa or a console usually wants to cover about two-thirds of the furniture's width; for most UAE living rooms that is an A2 paint. A3 suits a study, a hallway or a shelf. Originals come in the sheet size the calligrapher wrote, stated on each page; ask for the exact dimensions before you order if the wall is tight.
Framed or unframed?
Paints come framed when you choose a frame, in one of eight hand-finished mouldings (polished gold, matte black, oak, walnut and more), or rolled for your own framer. Originals ship unframed, rolled in a rigid tube, as the calligrapher made them; we can mount and frame one with glass in our workshop for a flat AED 300 whatever the size, for delivery inside the UAE.
Where a verse may hang
A verse of the Qur'an is hung where it is honoured: at eye level or above, in a majlis, a living room, a study or an entrance, never in a bathroom or near the floor.
How long it takes, and what delivery costs
Paints are made to order in 5–7 working days. Originals marked in hand are in the UAE and ship within days; the others are written to order by the calligrapher and take 3–4 weeks. Delivery anywhere in the UAE is a flat AED 50 per order for wall art, whatever the quantity; Worldwide Express is AED 250 per order, within 8 days.
Returns
Wall art is not returnable, originals included, and a paint is made for you. That is why we confirm the text and the spelling with you before anything is printed, and why, for an original, we send a daylight photograph and the exact sheet size before you buy. How to tell an original
An original carries the calligrapher's signature on the sheet. Look closely at the letters: a reed pen leaves ink that sits on the paper, slightly heavier where a stroke begins and where the pen turned, with the small irregularities of a hand. A print is flat and even. Every original on MASHQ is shown as the sheet you receive, and its page says whether it is in hand in the UAE or will be written to order.
Light, care and where to hang it
Ink on paper is patient but not indestructible. Keep an original out of direct sunlight, which fades paper and ink over the years, and away from humidity: never a bathroom, and not beside a kitchen. Handle an unframed sheet by its edges with clean, dry hands; framing it behind glass is the simplest protection. A paint on canvas is sturdier, and a soft dry cloth is all its frame needs. For both, a spot with natural light that the sun does not reach directly is ideal.
Choosing for a gift
Most calligraphy bought in the UAE is a gift, and the occasion usually chooses the words. A couple's names or a line of blessing for a wedding; a protective verse or «بيتنا جنتنا» for a new home; a name for a newborn; «وقل رب زدني علما» for a graduate. A paint lets you set the exact words and the recipient's name; an original is the gift for someone who will keep it for life.
