You can learn Arabic calligraphy online when the lessons check what you write, not only show it. Mashq Learn teaches five scripts, Ruq'ah, Naskh, Thuluth, Diwani and Farsi (Nastaliq), in 43 lessons each. Level 1 of every script is free and needs no account; the full course is AED 15 a month for one script, or AED 25 a month for all five.
Which script should you start with?
- Ruq'ah, if you want better everyday handwriting. It is the plainest of the scripts and the one most people write with.
- Naskh, if you want the classical path. It is the script of printed books and of the Qur'an, and it teaches proportion. Thuluth is learned alongside it.
- Thuluth, for the large, sweeping lines of mosque walls and master pieces. It rewards patience.
- Diwani and Farsi (Nastaliq) come after: Diwani for flowing ceremonial lines, Nastaliq for Persian verse.
Our guide to the Arabic calligraphy scripts shows each one side by side.
How the letters are measured
Calligraphers measure every letter in dots made by the pen that writes it. The alif, the first letter, stands 5 dots tall in Naskh, 7 in Thuluth, 6 in Diwani, and 3 in Ruq'ah and in Farsi; the other letters are sized against it. A useful online lesson measures your letter the same way: its height in dots, where it sits on the line, and how it leans.

How a lesson goes
In Mashq Learn you write on your screen with a mouse, your finger or an iPad pen, and the stroke behaves like a cut reed: broad along the line, narrow as it comes down. Each letter goes through four steps:
- over the faint letter;
- inside the hollow letter;
- beside the model;
- from memory.
After each try the lesson tells you the first thing to mend, in dots: your alif is short by one dot, or it stands above the line. The path runs from the pen and a single dot to letters, joined letters, words, and finally whole lines copied from a master's sheet. If you practise on paper, you can show your sheet to the camera and it counts the dots beside your alif; it runs on your own device and nothing is recorded or sent.

What an online course cannot do
Software measures and advises; it does not replace a teacher looking at your paper, your ink and the way you cut your pen. The traditional road to mastery is still years of study with a master. Use the lessons to build the habits that matter most, proportion, the baseline and a steady pen, and take a class when you can. That is why the Calligrapher plan adds a monthly class with a calligrapher.
What you need to start
A computer, a tablet or a phone, and ten minutes a day. For paper practice: a reed or a flat pen (3.8 mm is a good first width), ink, and smooth paper; the printable sheets have the dot guides printed in. Children can start on the page for young learners.
Quick answers
How long does it take? Ruq'ah gives readable results soonest; a classical script like Thuluth takes years of steady practice. Level 1 tells you within a few sessions whether the method suits you.
Do I need to read Arabic? It helps to know the letters, and the lessons start from them: the first lesson is the alif, the second the dot. Every lesson works in English and in Arabic.
Is there a certificate? Smart Coach includes one level exam a year, marked by a calligrapher. It is a record of practice, not an ijaza.
When a line becomes a piece
Many learners end up wanting a line they have practised on the wall. «وقل رب زدني علما», «العلم نور» and «من جدّ وجد» are calligraphy paints from AED 60, made to order in our UAE workshop; the whole lines of the masters are in Thuluth master pieces.
